Most of the times it is desired to convey the important message or information to the people in big institutions, like universities. Also, the absence of the office working person, creates trouble for their concerning people, when they do not leave any status/message behind for them. Thus the problem can be stated as how to keep in touch with people and how to provide the ability to convey the message to the concerned people irrespective to correspondent’s location. A GSM based Electronic Notice Board system is designed to provide the reliable means of be in touch with people. The message will be sent by the sender through short messaging service (SMS) and this will be exhibited on the display board, in the moving message fashion. The system designed comprises microcontroller as central unit interfaced with dot-matrix array. GSM modules and a SIM card have been used in order to hook it up to the GSM network. The message is sent to the micro-controller from mobile phone through SMS via GSM module. Which decodes the message and saves it in memory and after performing certain authentication of sender’s number, it sent it for display on the notice board. The design provides security to its access. Only the authorized person can access/share the message to display. Both hardware and software of the developed prototype are fully functioning and the tests have been successful.

There are many communication methods adopted in past to convey the message to the people. Few of them were smoke signals and with the advancement it takes the shape of sending written message through post. But these all methods have limitations with respect to time and distance. More advancement in communication system developed the loudspeakers through which the voice message can be sent to the people in the limited area. But the person wants to communicate with the people must always be present there for loud speaker announcements. And the second problem here is the continuous attention of the people to properly listen it. If it someone is not able to listen it or not present there at that particular moment, will be not able to have that information.
Another most common technique is paper print display at notice boards and such like this which are mostly used in the educational institutions and working areas in the industry to convey some important message to the concerned people. But, all these have some serious draw backs. Paper displaying technique has its limited scope as one has to take the print or write the new message every time and its presence for pasting the paper on the notice board is also important. On other
side, one has to go at the notice board quite near to see the printed message at it. Only a limited people can read it at a time. The old methods of communication in the sense stated above are being replaced rapidly by modern electronic means of communication. All the laps and draw backs of such like ancient means of communication paved the way to the modern electronic technology.
The communication has become very fast now a days. A person living at one corner of the world can communicate all over the world through some fast communication mediums. These mediums can be wired or wireless channels through which the message can be conveyed to the people anywhere in the world. Now a days the mobiles and e-mails are the main source of communication. Through an email, one can convey his message to the concerned person within no time. But communication will be done only if the concerned person is online at that time. Through the mobile SMS one can send his message within seconds to the people to whom he wants to convey message but this method has also limitations up to some extent. A message can be sent only those people which have their own mobile phones and their mobile number must be known to the conveyer. One of the solutions is electronic notice board on which the message to be conveyed displays at all the times and it updates the message continuously and displays the latest message. In this field, the work has been done at LCD screens and dot matrix display already to some extent. At first the message was displayed at dot matrix in very simple way with least flexibility of message changing. Mostly moving message displays are installed at specific places to provide the awareness to the people about some special event. But this can display only that message for which it is programmed. In order to change the message, one has to reprogram the system for new message which is impossible for non-professional person. Moreover the presence of one person will be again a problem. There is a need of wireless notice board which takes the message form sender through some wireless medium and displays it on the notice board within no time.
The purpose of this project is to design a GSM based news/information updating system to improve the communication. Daily headlines and important information can be displayed through an SMS from the mobile phone. This can also be used as an electronic notice board of Electrical Engineering Department to display the important notices like time table, date sheets, results or some essential information for students by making further enhancements in the display size. Secondly, the office working people may leave the necessary information behind them, at the display out of their office, from their mobile phones.
In this project here, the technique of moving message display on the dot-matrix array is adopted. The display is interfaced with PC’s serial port at first. The message to be displayed is typed by the computer’s key board and sent to the micro controller via PC’s serial port interfaced with controller’s serial port. No doubt, a good flexibility of message changing at any time is available in this technique. But the problem here is that the physical presence of the computer operator is necessary full time there. So it is further extended to the more efficient and flexible way of presenting information. The GSM module is interfaced with the controller and display unit. It is the swiftest and flexible way of providing information to the people concerned. Now, we have to just change the SMS by our mobile phone from any location and send it to the display quick at that time. At first, the message to be displayed, is stored in the internal memory of microcontroller and after completion of this step, it is merged with GSM modem along with external EEPROM memory. Now the message to be displayed is sent from the mobile phone and after decoding this message microcontroller saves it in the external memory. After performing certain authentications, controller sends the message to the dot matrix array for display in the Moving Message Display manner. Maximum 160 characters message can be sent from mobile phone which may consist of alphanumeric characters. Only the latest message will be displayed at the dot matrix array. At the reception of new message with its valid authentication number, the previous data stored in memory is formatted first, and new message is stored in the memory and then displayed on the notice board.
This project has versatile valuable applications for communication in the massive dense population areas. At many places, specific and important information have to be shared with so many people e.g. Railway Stations, Air Ports, General Bus stands and such like public areas.
Today, announcements on loud speakers are made to tell about the arrival and departure for trains after some regular time intervals. Most often, the voice is not clear to give correct information. And if someone is not able to listen clear once; he will have to wait up to the second announcement. By using this notice board, time table for departure/arrival of the trains may be displayed at the main entrance of the Railway station, where everyone concerned may get his required information. Secondly, the important notices for the passengers may also be displayed. The system possesses great flexibility, so, it is easy to change message being displayed by simply changing the text by the GSM device (mobile phone) so many times.
Similarly, it can be used at air ports to display the timings for the flights landing/take off, and to share any other important information with the passengers. Shopping Malls and markets may also involve its application for giving the daily updates and important news to the customers.
One more versatile application is on the National Highways. Especially, in the mountains areas where land sliding occurs often in the winter season which causes the road blocking even for several hours. The information about any mishap may be shared with people travelling at the roads using this Notice Board. Message may be sent and displayed at far distant display board to inform the people about situation. In the offices, the person may share important information or anything necessary to be shared with the people of his office concern, at his absence from the office.
