Project Abstract
The motivation for doing this project comes from the internship that we have done in ABB and NTDC. Working there we got the exposure that how the private sector have been selling very costly protection systems to the government sector. For the sake of solution this project has been designed as a “SMART” module keeping in mind safety and cost effectiveness.

This module monitors the current, voltage and temperature and trips the circuit under any abnormal condition. The input to this module has been taken through the CT and PT in the form of reduced replica. LM-35 is the temperature sensor which will provide the value of temperature.

These analogue values are scaled through RC circuit and fed to the PIC (18 series) microcontroller where the inbuilt ADC convert them into digital form. These values are then compared with the specified values and the signal is generated accordingly.  Meanwhile the values are being displayed on the GLCD with their animated waveforms and also being stored in the MMC.

Key Features of SMART Protection Module

The key feature of this module is the two way communication with the remote responsible personal through GSM. When the fault occurs, the fault information will be immediately sent to the remote personal.

If one wants to restore the system he can send the restoring command via SMS and the system will be restored. We can also see the information stored in the MMC when it is inserted in the card reader module and interfaced through the serial port with our PC.

Project Summary

This project incorporates different sub-modules to ensure all the best features of protection device known to us. The module comprises of the following units:

  • Data Processing unit
  • Data storage & reader unit
  • Display unit
  • Communication unit
  1. Data Acquisition Unit

Isolation Transformer

The CT & PT are providing the reduced replicas  of current  and voltage respectively. The turn ratio for the Current Transformer is 30:5 and for the potential transformer it is 220:12.

Temperature sensor

LM-35 is the temperature sensor which will convert the temperature into voltage form 10 mV/Cº.

  1. Data Processing unit

This is the brain of our module which is basically a PIC 18f452 micro-controller. The analogue values taken from CT, PT and LM- 35 are converted by the inbuilt ADC of this unit. These values are then compared with the specified values. If there is any abnormal condition the required signals will be sent to all the  units accordingly.

  1. Data storage & reader unit

We have incorporated this feature to provide portability to our information. The fault records will be stored in MMC and can be read at any time by the reader unit when interfaced through a serial port with our PC.

  1. Display unit

This unit comprises of a SAMSUNG (KS0108) 128×64 monochrome Graphical LCD. The purpose of this unit is to display the operating conditions of the system with their animated waveforms.

  1. Communication unit

This unit consists of a GSM module which will provide two way communications to the remote responsible personal.  When the fault occurs, the fault information will be immediately sent to the remote personal.
